After more than 10 years in research and development, I decided to quit my job at Daimler Research and start my own software company. Yes, I wanted to think and act differently, to be one step ahead. I wanted to become an entrepreneur, build a sustainable business, do things differently and accept trial and error. My goal was to turn research ideas or prototypes into successful products, even under extreme uncertainty. Innovation requires experience, a startup requires passion, requires dedication, requires passion and a willingness to suffer.
What does a typical startup CEO do?
- Well, everything: team management, customer acquisition, product and project management, sales, finance, research and development, administration, legal and many other tasks.
- Hold annual meetings of the board of directors, shareholders and supervisory board, and report to the authorities
- Oversee accounting, file annual financial reports
- Provide overall company representation
- Strategic product planning & business development, ensuring the company’s product roadmap
- Developing and maintaining the company’s business plan, building and maintaining a strong brand
- Continually research and liaise with key players in our maps & navigation business, explore emerging new market segments
- Customer acquisition, meeting potential strategic customers and partners
- Investor management: updating shareholders, pitching to investors, speaking opportunities at industry networking events
- Build and continually refine the company’s product vision, strategy and market positioning
- Recruit, build & maintain the team: create an environment & culture in which our business can succeed

At OneStepAhead we have started developing Android applications from the very early days of Android. Our focus was to design anbd implement mostly free of charge apps in the maps and mobility domain.
MapDroyd
MapDroyd was an offline vector map viewer app for Android – free but closed-source. This app was one of the very early offline mapping apps for Android. Once you had downloaded your MapDroyd application and your favorite maps form OneStepAhead’s map server onto your local storage (SD card) you could use them without being online. This was extremely helpful when you travel outside your country and mobile data connections become very expensive. Simply carry your individual maps offline in your pocket, always at your fingertips.
WikiDroyd
the Wikipedia encyclopedia “to go” was an offline Wikipedia app, very efficiently stored articles to read on Android devices.
